ICEFEST 2007 BRINGS NEW MUSIC TO NEIGHBORHOODS ACROSS CHICAGO,
SEPT. 22-30, 2007
With guest composers Lee Hyla and Philippe Manoury

CHICAGO, IL – The country's most groundbreaking new music festival, ICEFest, returns to Chicago for the fifth year with more shows in more venues than ever before. A hyperkinetic new music marathon, ICEFest 2007, Sept 22-30, brings the music of living composers to bars, churches, colleges, galleries and public spaces from Pilsen to the North Side. This year, audiences can choose from 11 different programs ranging in style from classics of the European avant-garde, favorites of American minimalism, and genre-defying electro-acoustics. Work of acknowledged new music masters will be performed alongside brand new pieces from up-and-coming composers, including 10 world and 15 US premieres. ICEFest is presented by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). Known for its daringly adventurous program selections, high-energy performances and virtuosic playing, ICE is quickly becoming America's preeminent new music ensemble.

Since its humble origins as a three-show festival with a $1,000 budget, ICEFest has grown to become the annual must-see event for a broad spectrum of Chicago music fans, including symphony season-ticket holders, electronica aficionados, music students, and indie art enthusiasts. Every ICEFest program consists of about 60 minutes of music, rather than a full-length concert program, and includes an informal pre- or post-concert interaction between composers, performers and audience members.

"We've always maintained that new music belongs to everyone and everywhere," said flautist Claire Chase, ICE's founder and Executive Director. "Our approach to the music is not so much an educational exercise as it is a collaboration with our audience. ICEFest celebrates the intersection of contemporary culture and daily life. It's an invitation to participate in a dialogue about what's hot, what's going to make history, and what's going to transform the way we look at music and at our lives. Tickets to all shows are very accessibly priced or free so that as many people as possible can participate."

Founded in 2001, ICE comprises thirty dynamic and versatile young performers who are committed to advancing the music of our time. A champion of music by emerging composers, ICE has given over 400 world premieres to date, and has performed the music of young composers from 25 different countries. A winner of the coveted Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, ICE will give over sixty performances this season in venues ranging from public schools in Pilsen to the stages of Lincoln Center.
