JEB BISHOP

Chicago-based trombonist/improviser/composer Jeb Bishop has been active in new/jazz/improvised music since 1993. Originally trained as a classical trombonist, he was also active in underground rock bands in North Carolina in the 1980s. He has attained international recognition for his work with groups including the Vandermark 5, the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Globe Unity Orchestra, and Atomic School Days, among others. His own projects include the Jeb Bishop Trio, the collaborative quartet The Engines, and Lucky 7s.

His composition for Chicago Sound Map 2010 will focus on the dichotomy/sympathy between electronic and acoustic instruments, the notational strategies appropriate to each, and the traditions of improvising that have grown around each.

HERESY OF THE FREE SPIRIT

Jozef van Wissem - lute
Che Chen - multi-instruments (NYC)
Robbie Lee - multi-instruments (NYC)

Che Chen (true primes) & Robbie Lee (howling hex, baby dee) are Brooklyn, NY based multi-instrumentalists who have been steadily and intensively developing their unique approach to free improvisation over the last several years. Using a shifting constellation of instruments that has included bass clarinets, baroque recorders, reed and pipe organs, renaissance keyboard instruments, flutes, saxophones, bowed and plucked strings, little drums, bells, tape machines and their voices, Che Chen and Robbie Lee create earthy, slow moving improvisations that are informed as much by the ethnic folk traditions of the world as they are by 20th century composition and improvisation. Their music places precedent in listening, attention and dynamic interaction in the moment. Chen and Lee have released an LP and several cd-r's on their own Telegraph Harp imprint.

Help Harold Arts kickstart our pool party and join us for performances by Chicago's Word and Number and LA's Mooey Moobau. Word and Number is a Chicago based duo specializing in synthesized balladry and dancables; their gamer-inspired melodies generate a blistering live show. Mooey Moobau is the product of all your rotten fantasies, abstracting language and exploiting phonetics to disorienting ends. His songs are ruled by natural speech rhythms and melodies, and overflowing with alliterative poetry

This performance is to raise awareness of our upcoming 2010 Residency and our Kickstarter.com fundraising effort for our Pool Party project. Our recording studio (constructed in a reclaimed indoor swimming pool) will host the projects of independent labels Captcha Records, Vosotros, and Sundmagi Records, while a resident recording engineer and producer aid the efforts of musicians on the farm. Applications for our 2010 residency program are due in 10 DAYS, apply today!
