Reading

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm

The still-evolving reading series, which began in the winter of 2006, is founded on the grimace-and-grin theory that, though we have all been through some foolish times in the past, we're ok with that now. At least, ok enough to share it with an audience of complete strangers laughing at our expense. Readers Molly Each (of No Touching magazine), Megan Stielstra (of 2nd Story), Zach Dodson (of Featherproof Books), Larissa Zageris (of "Fang!"), and Oops founder Jaime Calder will perform their hand-penned tales of humility, spending their first Saturday in April reflecting on how they've been "Unlucky in Love". Musician Angie Ma, whose previous performances have included Kermit the Frog covers and crowd sing-a-longs to "Jesse's Girl", will open. $5

THE ENGINES!
The Engines are an awesome band featuring four of Chicago's best-known and busiest improvising musicians (L to R below): trombonist Jeb Bishop, saxophonist Dave Rempis, bassist Nate McBride, and drummer Tim Daisy.

"These engines can go from zero to 60 in a heartbeat and stop on a dime, but it's when set on cruise control — guiding the listener with subtlety and finesse rather than steamroller force — that the ride is most enjoyable."
-The Columbia Free-Times

"The front line taps into the deep grooves carved out by the rhythm section, which frequently bumps into the blues without exactly embracing it. Rempis and Bishop unfurl plenty of muscular, searching solos, but my favorite parts are when the two get tangled in each other’s lines: you can hear the years of experience at work in the way they support and challenge each other without getting in each other’s way."
-Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

"Perhaps it is because these four have played together so often and write for each other’s strengths that the tunes, varied as they are texturally and dynamically, seem of a piece, a real band playing band music rather than the Bishop/Rempis/McBride/Daisy 4."
