Friday Feb. 22nd at Heaven Gallery: PROTEST HEAVEN jazz and improvised music series FORBES GRAHAM (from Boston) + KIMMEL/LEVIN/BRANCH/RIORDAN Jeff Kimmel, bass clarinet About the touring artists: FORBES GRAHAM is a composer, trumpet player, and electronic musician currently based in the Boston area. He has appeared on over 30 recordings, including studio appearances on such labels as Metal Blade, Tzadik, and Troubleman. Forbes has performed and recorded with a very diverse group of artists, including Erase Errata, Rakalam Bob Moses, Steve Lantner, Daughters, Raqib Hassan, Jim Hobbs, The One Am Radio, and Luther Gray. His composition “Variations on the Fibonacci Sequence” was commissioned by the Greenwall Foundation and world premiered at the 2007 Festival of New Trumpet. Forbes has also written music for the new music/rock ensemble Normal Love. He has appeared at numerous festivals including High Zero and The Wire’s Adventures in Modern Music. His work incorporates many genres including drum n’ bass, jazz, contemporary classical, noise, and hip-hop. DANIEL LEVIN has performed and/or recorded with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Rob Brown, Joe Morris, William Parker, and others. He as appeared as a sideman on Clean Feed records, EMANEM, Not Two, and Rogue Art, and as a leader, on Riti Records and HatHut. Sunday, March 2nd - 8pm Never Enough Hope: Small Group Improvisations After two consecutive shows at AV-aerie (Friday and Saturday night Feb. 29th and March 1st), Toby Summerfield's Never Enough Hope will break down into small groups and perform ad hoc improvisations at Heaven Gallery! Never Enough Hope is a very large ensemble put together every so often by Toby Summerfield. The first never enough hope performances were in 2005, at Open End and at The hungry brain. The piece, also titled "never enough hope" is their debut recording. Their hope is to be able to perform more regularly than every two years. The inspiration and motiviation behind this band is to celebrate the friendship and community particular to musicians and music lovers. It is the sound of a bunch of friends singing together, happy to be around each other, doing what they love. He has played throughout Europe, Canada, USA and Asia. Arizona based duo: Michael Lich, guitar and banjo and Robert Matheson, double bass About the Ironwood Duo: Internationally recognized performers and composers, Michael Lich and Robert Matheson both have strong backgrounds in classical and jazz music, while each brings with him musical tastes of several other styles. Their performances range from Bach harpsichord preludes to the bebop sounds of Thelonious Monk, to the funk and bluegrass influenced grooves found in their ground breaking original compositions.
